Weddings occur in all four of the seasons: winter, summer, spring and fall. Each season brings its special features to the wedding. This also makes the wedding dress selection dependent upon the season in which it will be worn. This is of course true for most clothing you wear so the same applies to wedding wear.
For summer weddings, dresses are made of lighter fabrics due to the high temperatures during this season. Some common fabrics seen in this season are organza, linen, chiffon, crepe, georgette and light weight silks. Bridal gowns usually feature a simple silhouette. Slip dresses and sheathes are preferred styles over heavy ball gowns with many layers and a lot of fabric. Simplicity is also true for veil choices. When selecting footwear, many brides choose dressy sandals. Some brides have even gone barefoot in outdoor weddings.
The summer weather also affects the groom’s attire. Some summer weddings opt out of tuxedos for the groom and his party. Some men prefer to dress in khaki slacks, sport coats with colorful tie, usually in one of the wedding colors. Morning suits are also a popular choice for dressing the groom.
Holding a wedding in the winter allows opportunities for rich elegance. Wedding dresses for winter weddings are usually made from rich fabrics that include velvet, satin, brocade and heavier silks. These rich looking fabrics bring a sense of opulence to the winter wedding event. Some brides still want a wedding dress that does not have sleeves or straps. However, they will usually add an accessory such as a wrap, cape or shrug to provide them with some additional warmth. For the groom, black tie is usually the order of the day as winter weddings tend to be more formal in nature.
Fall wedding dresses are often in off white shades such as cream. This tends to fit with the season and make the colors richer. Fabrics such as brocade and velvet are popular in the fall as is lace. With spring weddings, the fabrics do tend to get lighter with the warmer weather. Grooms can wear either a tux or other more casual wedding attire.
